Rugby League Mens Division 2 Hunters 2 v Hunters 3   5-1

After a shaky start being a team member down, the second team almost had to call up the experience of the chairman of the board! But then the fourth man turned up and reluctantly the chairman put his racket away. Once under way the new pairings of the second team were stretched almost to breaking point by the experienced third team, with some choice words from the captain of the seconds along the way. Good job there were no juniors present! The match score in no way showed the tightness of the match. The seconds finally took the match 5 rubbers to 1, with four out of the 6 rubbers being played to three very close games. Both teams played extremely well on the night and I'm sure the next encounter will be as good and as closely matched as this one.

Coventry League Mens Division 4 Ernesford v Hunters   2-7

A pair of headlights flashing in a car park marked the start of our league season. Luckily it was my lift to the away venue and nothing more suited to a carry on film. Despite one of our players being held up at work, the dark and the rain, we fired up the trusty sat nav and were soon under way. Even though our opponents had switched to a new venue, we all arrived on time and got on with it. Drama ensued with a mid-court clash costing our pair a racquet and a nasty knuckle injury. With our captain leading by example - he'd left the country - we had to play a reserve, but everyone played well and we scored the win 7-2. With our regular pairs scoring 6-0, a good start to the season.

Rugby League Mens Division 4 Hunters 4 v Rugby Youth   6-0

A fine start to the season for the newly formed Hunters 4th team though the 6-0 scoreline belies the spirited performance from the Rugby Youth team. The first pairing of Dan Bunker and Nat Toms played very well and both their rubbers comfortably but Martin Toms and Richard Lewis were given a much sterner test by Mark Lorraine and Murray Irvine before experience prevailed in the 3rd game. This patter was repeated in the final rubbers with Richard and Dan winning well but Martin and Nat were taken to 3rd game before eventually triumphing.

Coventry League Mens Division 4 Hunters v Adders 4   7-2

Feeling confident after our first win, we fielded a full team for the first time this season. Our opponents proved to be a tough team to play and all the games were close. Yet again, a racquet was a casualty of a front court clash, annoyingly (is there ever a good time?) right in the middle of one one of the tightest games of the evening. When the dust settled, we won 7-2. Are broken racquets going to be an ongoing theme for this season?

Rugby League Mens Division 1 Hunters 1 v Trinity 1   2-4

With the sad news that our longest serving member of the first team is unavailable for at least half the season, we rearranged our teams and got ready for our first home match. With two good wins in the Coventry league under our belts, we felt we might be able to put up a better show compared to last season. Unfortunately our first pair got off to a very slow start and came under heavy fire from the opposition, while our second pair put up a brave fight but couldn't make an impression on the Trinity seconds. Finding ourselves 2-0 down we wondered if a draw was still achievable. Our first pair rallied and scored a good win against Trinity's second pair. The change of tactics in the second end nearly pulled the Trinity pair back into contention. Meanwhile our second pair, having lost the first end, played an excellent second end to take their game into the third. Suddenly a result seemed possible, but the strong Trinity first pair pulled away and took the third end. We found ourselves in the very familiar position of being 3-1 down in the split, needing both remaining games for the draw. Our second spilt quickly took two games and all eyes were on the first split. The game went to the third end, but Trinity pulled the win out of the bag in a very close match.

Rugby League Mens Division 4 St Philips 4 v Hunters 4   5-1

Hunters 4 took on St Philips 4 who proved to be a strong team and alas, Hunters lost 5-1. Dan Bunker and Nat Toms struggled against the strong pairing of Fowler and A. Miah while Martin Toms and Andy Lees lost a very close match to Pollard and J. Miah. In the reverse rubbers Andy and Martin also could not find a way to beat Fowler and Miah but there was much more drama in the other rubber. Nat dislocated his knee and it looked like his night was over. After some time to recover he amazingly was able to continue and Dan Bunker switched to "awesome" mode to show a wholly new side to him and secure Hunters only win of the night! Alas this could not be continued for long and while Dan and Andy fought hard the now flagging Nat and Martin were easily overwhelmed.

Rugby League Mens Division 2 Trinity 2 v Hunters 3   6-0

Coventry League Mens Division 4 Old Warwickians v Hunters   2-7

Chaos in the run up to this match, with a total confusion over the date of the match, and much back and forth by text. With a team in place and ready to go, two last minute withdrawals caused even more frantic communication. With scant time to spare we have a team and off we go. Half our team fall foul of the old 'extra sports hall round the back' ploy, but finally we are all in the same place and ready for some action. Our first pair put up a strong showing and managed to keep all racquets intact, for 3 points. Our other two pairs, featuring one regular player each and a first time substitute, both gave it their all. The second pair played a very close first game, going to 3 and clinching the decider 21-19. Once they hit their stride, they took the remaining two games with less drama. A mid court clash in the last made the spectators think we'd lost another racquet, but fortune was with us this time. The third pair claimed the first game, came very close in the second, but couldn't make an impression on the opponent's first pair. Match result 7-2. Special thanks to our two substitutes, one of which was on his match debut, and the third team captain who helped shuffle players around

Rugby League Mens Division 1 Hunters 1 v St Philips 2   4-2

A very close set of first games saw Phil and Alex narrowly edge out the St Philips first pair in a tough first match, which went to three and featured a nerve racking 23-21 win in the first game. Michal and Aseem also won their first game 23-21, but the St Philips pair's canny tactics saw them take the next two games. At 1-1, Aseem and Michal came out strongly against the St Philips first pair, taking the first game 21-17, narrowly losing the second 19-21 before the opposition took off and claimed the last. Alex and Phil won the first game against the second pair comfortably, but in the second the St Philips team had a surprise in store. With a complete change of tactics, they were ahead all the way through the second game, but the Hunter's pair hung in and staged a last minute come back to win 25-23. With the match in the balance, all players knew that any result was possible and tension were high as nobody wanted to let their respective teams down. After so many hard fought games, everyone had to dig deep and produce their very best sporting cliches. After the first set of games, Phil and Aseem lost a close game 18-21. Michal and Alex did better, only losing 19-21. The remaining games were all close, with another 24-22, but the Hunter's team showed their mettle and won all four of the remaining games for a 4-2 victory.

Coventry League Mens Division 4 Aerotech 2 v Hunters   4-5

Somehow, and I take no responsibility for this, the team came by the impression that we were playing Aerosmith. Facing the only team so far to score against the current league leaders made for some difficult tactical decisions. My first was should I drop myself in favour of a player not tortured by the evillest of lurgies. Trying to find a player at short notice seemed more of a headache(!), so I resolved to struggle on for the sake of the team. Aseem, as it turns out, is not into rock at all and withdrew on the morning of the match, leaving me to find a replacement anyway. Martin bravely stepped up to the plate at short notice, making his debut for the Coventry team this season. Discussion in the car revolved around Aerosmith only having 5 members and the possibility that they might pull in a ringer. We also kicked around the possibility of splitting up our first pair to spread strength more evenly throughout the team. In the car park we soon discovered who the mysterious 6 member of Aerosmith was. None other than my first coach! Once we got into the hall, and took a look at the opposition warming up, it was clear we were facing some tough opposition. This was no time to be splitting up established pairs, so Michal and Simon would be repeating their performance. With the match underway, Alex and Phil took the fight to their opponents and quickly scored a good win, with Michal and Simon not far behind. Martin and Dan struggled against their third pair, leaving us 2-1 up. In the grudge match against my former coach, we managed a big lead in both games and kept it for another point. Michal and Simon took on the third pair and lost in a very close game. 3-2. At this point, needing two more wins to take the match, the team was in "full on" tactics mode. The pairs sitting off were looking for any tactical advantages against the opposition pairs playing and pairs completing their matches were quick to pass tips onto the players waiting to come on. A proper team effort from everyone involved. Martin and Dan took on the opponent's first pair. They scored well, but were outgunned. 3-3. Phil and Alex scored a quick win against the so far unbeaten opposition third pair, and were off in time to catch the end of the match where Simon and Michal won a very tight game against the first pair. 5-3. With the victory well in hand and our traditional 7-2 score out of reach, Martin and Dan took the field for the final game. In their best game of the evening, they took the opposition to three, but lost it in the end. Final result: 5-4 to Hunters

Rugby League Mens Division 4 Claybrooke 4 v Hunters 4   0-6

With Dan Bunker unavailable the captain avoided a much deserved dropping and was able to join in Hunters comprehensive victory over Claybrooke 4. The score line again hides a closer tie that it might seem with the Claybrooke pair of Howes and Charlesworth taking both their rubbers to a 3rd game before succumbing. The youthful pairing of Dan Nutt and Nat Toms worked very well under pressure and the senior pair (in years at least) of Martin Toms and Richard Lewis also held their own. Dan Nutt and Richard Lewis proved utterly devastating in the final rubber, conceding only 7 points while Martin and Nat Toms had to work a lot harder before securing the final rubber in the 3rd game.

Rugby League Mens Division 2 Hunters 3 v St Philips 3   2-4

Rugby League Mens Division 1 St Philips 1 v Hunters 1   2-4

A night of some incredibly close games. Most of the matches went to three and there were several nail biting tie breakers. As a result, its late and I'm exhausted, so I'm going to let the match result speak for itself. Very well played, gentlemen.

Rugby League Mens Division 2 Hunters 2 v St Philips 3   0-6

Coventry League Mens Division 4 Hunters v Balsall Common 2   3-6

Facing what would undoubtedly be the toughest team in this division, we were playing at home to Balsall Common. Veterans of division 3, Balsall Common had scored a better points difference in all their matches so far, even though neither team had yet to lose a match. We had done everything we could before the match and had our strongest possible team ready for action, for the first time this season. Dan and Simon put up a brave fight, scored well in their games but were unable to put any points on the board. Michal and Aseem were just edged out by the first and second pairs, but took their last game of the evening against the opposing third pair for a point. Phil and Alex scored two good wins against the first and third pairs, but lost the third end against the seconds in a very close match.

Rugby League Mens Division 2 Trinity 2 v Hunters 2   6-0

Rugby League Mens Division 4 Harris v Hunters 4   2-4

A first encounter with Harris proved to be a fantastic evening of badminton especially as the captain could now watch from the sidelines after earning a well deserved rest (or was dropped for being rubbish- you choose). After playing so well together against Claybrooke Nat Toms and Dan Nutt were again paired together but neither they nor Richard Lewis and Dan Bunker were able to overcome the very strong pair of Hunter and Barot. This left the tie evenly balanced at 2-2 but then both Dans switched to overdrive with Dan Bunker and Nat winning well before Dan Nutt and Richard sealed the victory in another hard fought rubber.

Rugby League Mens Division 1 Hunters 1 v Claybrooke 1   0-6

This would be our last match in the Rugby league this year and was sure to be our toughest. Not only were our opponents top of the league, but they've been undefeated for a great many years. A further disappointment was that Alex was unable to join us for this match, so we would be unable to test our new team format against the champions. Making his debut for the 1st team, Dan stepped up to the plate and Michal and Aseem would be our regular pairing. Everyone played well and gave their all against a much stronger opposition, however we were outplayed in every match.Plenty of positives from six very enjoyable games: The team performed better than we might have expected and the pairing of Phil and Dan & Aseem and Phil took their games to the third end.

Coventry League Mens Division 4 Adders 4 v Hunters   5-4

The Christmas break has thrown a hurdle in the path of the Hunters team and beyond the self-inflicted trauma of over-indulgence, we faced work commitments, extended holidays, mothers' birthdays, cracked ribs and, shockingly, another badminton commitment. Consequently, only two members of the starting squad were available. I had almost exhausted the entire team roster, but the Hunters players stepped up to the plate and we set off to do the best we could under the circumstances. Everyone was regretting the one extra mince pie as we warmed up, but the hall was particularly cold and open to the elements! So extra insulation was appreciated. Nobody had thought to bring their cold weather gear, so we warmed up as best we could. Simon and Dan & Martin and David took to the field, while I could only watch and wait for our secret weapon to turn up. Sadly we lost both the first games, but Martin and David were starting to look like they meant business by the end of their first game. Two - nil down is just about the right time for the cavalry and ours turned up in the form of Steve, our original and undefeated team captain back from exile. A swift warm up (nobody was warm in that hall!) and Phil and Steve took on Adders first pair, clinching the victory. Martin and David beat the opposing third pair and we'd equalised to 2-2. Despite their best efforts, pairs two and three were unable to win either of their next two matches, whilst Phil and Steve won both of theirs to keep the score level at 4-4. It was a huge ask for Simon and Dan, playing the opponent's first pair at 4-4. The match result would be decided here, and the opposition were too strong in the first end. Some half time coaching and some encouragement from the bench saw our boys come out fighting. Playing a much better game, as evidenced by their score, it was unfortunately not quite enough and Adders took the game and the match. Final result: Hunters 4, Adders 5. It was a big task for this team to make an impression on Adders when we were missing so many regular players. We did well to score as well as we did, everybody gave good account of themselves. Thanks to all the players for turning out and giving it some welly.

Rugby League Mens Division 2 Claybrooke 3 v Hunters 3  3-3

Coventry League Mens Division 4 Hunters v Old Warwickians   7-2

Happy birthday to Steve, who was lured to the match with a promise of cake. Although still missing Alex and Simon, both to injury, we nevertheless had a much fuller squad than last time. With our second pair, Aseem and Mike, back in action and Steve reprising his efforts in the first pair, we took to the courts whilst waiting for both teams' third pair to arrive. Taking both games in two ends, we were 2-0 by the time the third pairs took to the court. To keep things moving we opted to play out of order and each sides' first pair took on the opponents' seconds. By the time the dust had settled, both our first and second pairs had won. Simon Davies and Dan, in a first time outing, were unable to bring home the match winning point, leaving us at a cliff-hanger with the board reading 4-1. In the next matches, Aseem and Mike completed their hat-trick and Simon and Dan scored a good win against the opponents second pair. 6-1 With the match result settled, Phil and Steve won their last while Dan and Simon played a very tight game against the opponent's first pair and despite going to the third end, they couldn't prevail. Final score: 7-2

Rugby League Mens Division 2 St Philips 3 v Hunters 3   1-5

Rugby League Mens Division 1 Hunters 1 v Claybrooke 2   6-0

Claybrooke had broken out the huskies and braved the snow to get to Ashlawn. For the first time since Christmas we were fielding a full team, but even though Alex was keen to get back on court there were still some questions over his fitness. Michal and Aseem started well, taking their first game. Phil and Alex started more gently, losing the first end, but hitting their stride and taking the match. With that hiccup out of the way, the Hunter's players went on to win the remaining games with no further drama.

Rugby League Mens Division 3 Rugby Youth v Hunters 4   3-3

The Collingwood Centre is fast becoming our favourite venue as this match was every bit as much fun as the one with Harris. Rugby Youth fielded a player for whom youth was a distant memory but this drafting in of experience proved a very sound move to provide a very even tie. Neither Dan Bunker and Richard Lewis or our own youth contingent of Nat Toms and Dan Nutt could overcome Irvine and Walilay but again the Dans were ruthless in the reverse rubbers so this one also arrived at 2-2. The final rubbers saw Nat and Dan Bunker losing in a close tie to Walilay and Lorraine but Dan "the Destroyer" Nutt and Richard won to leave the tie a draw and ensure that a good time was had by all.

Rugby League Mens Division 3 Hunters 4 v Harris   3-3

With Dan Bunker again unavailable the good times had to end and the captain was again called on to perform. Martin Toms and Richard Lewis could not overcome the undefeatable pair of Hunter and Barot and while Dan Nutt and Nat Toms also lost they showed up their elders by at least taking the rubber to a 3rd game. Both pairs won their reverse tie so for the 3rd match running it arrived at 2-2. There were to be no heroics this time though as while Dan and Richard won their rubber Martin and Nat collapsed to a heavy defeat that saw the tie end as a draw.

Coventry League Mens Division 4 Hunters v Aerotech 2  8-1

Aerotech were only one point behind us in the table, and on about the same points difference. This would be a pivotal match: we were playing for second place in the league and probably promotion. Steve and Simon were both unavailable, so we were grateful to Ian for stepping up. We had found Aerotech a tough opponent, but were hoping that our home advantage and plastic shuttles would make a difference. We got off to a cracking start. Mike and Aseem won their first game while Ian and Dan won their first end 24-22. They lost the second, but rallied in the third to put us 2-0. Phil and Alex lost their traditional warm up game, before getting up to speed and beating the opponent's first pair in three games. Meanwhile Mike and Aseem scored a good victory against the opponents third pair. With the score at 4-0, things were looking very good indeed. We continued to keep the pressure on the opponents and soon the score stood at 8-0, with Ian and Dan battling Aerotech's first pair. Both pairs were giving it their all - we were playing for a clean sweep and they were trying to avoid the wooden spoon. Ian and Dan took the first game 21-18, lost the second 21-18 and, in a nerve racking final game lost 21-19. Final result 8-1, and we have maintained second place and with it promotional chances.

Rugby League Mens Division 2 Hunters 3 v Claybrooke 3   5-1

Coventry League Mens Division 4 Coventry Uni v Hunters   2-7

We planned this away match with military precision. Four of our players would arrive on time and begin play, then the remaining pair would get there a little later due to work commitments. The very best laid plans never survive contact with reality and this one went south rapidly as Michal and Alex were both held up at work and I was locked in a store cupboard and, with the clock ticking, was forced to break out the fire exit. Luckily I didn't set off any alarms; I had vision of an entire sports centre of people, including a swimming pool full, standing around in the car park while I attempted a swift exit. Once we arrived to find the match hadn't yet started, we swiftly put our team back into its usual formation, and with only Alex missing sent Michal & Aseem and Dan & Steve out for their first games. By the time Alex arrived we were 2-0 up and while we were losing our tradition first end, Dan & Steve had put us 3-0 ahead. The opponent's first pair were tough to play and even though we won the second end to 8, the decider turned into a nail biter as we squared off at 21 all. In the end we took the game 24-22, to put us 4-0 ahead. Meanwhile Aseem and Michael had won another game. Coventry University's first pair came out fighting against Aseem and Michal, winning the first 21-15. Our second pair responded by winning the second end 21-19, before losing the decider 21-19. Alex and Phil found the opponent's pairs deceptively difficult to play against, but took both of their remaining games. Luckily Steve was on hand for some half time coaching. Dan & Steve took on the opponent's first pair in the last match of the evening, with the score standing at 7-1. They played well, but ultimately couldn't bring back the point. Final result, 7-2

Coventry League Mens Division 4 Hunters v Ernesford   9-0

We had a full team ready for action and everybody played well contributing to a 9-0 victory. Highlights over the evening included Phil & Alex winning their first game for a change, Dan & Steve winning a nail biting 26-24 game and Michael & Aseem coming back from a first game defeat to win their last game in three ends. Everyone kept their racquets intact this time.

Rugby League Mens Division 1 Claybrooke 2 v Hunters 1   1-5

In our closest match this season, we took a trip to Lutterworth to play Claybrooke second team. Our team was bolstered by Arthur, back in action after half a season out, due to surgery. We started poorly, losing both opening ends in each game. However, a half time pep talk and change of tactics saw both Hunter's pairs win both opening games. It was nice to see some of the old Arthur magic in action. Michael and Aseem lost their first end against the opponents first pair before rallying and winning their match. Phil & Arthur struggled against the second pair eventually losing two tight games to 18 and 19. In the split, only needing one more result for the win, both teams had tough games. Each went to 3, with the Hunters pairs winning out, for a 5-1 victory. Of six games, five went to three ends. Congratulations to the team for a most well fought victory.

Rugby League Mens Division 1 Hunters 1 v St Philips 1   2-4

Hunters is a family friendly club and as such we tend to keep colourful language to a minimum. The occasional expression in the heat of the moment is usually taken in good cheer, but a match report consisting of only three words and each of them more appropriate to a Samuel L. Jackson movie really won't do. Thus, I came to reconsider my first draft of my match report written in the car on the way home. Having scored a win against St Philips first team in the first leg, we were hopeful, however it was not to be. Both Phil and Alex were playing badly and we swiftly found ourselves 2-0 down. Michal and Aseem were unable to bring in any points, but Phil and Alex did score a point against the opponents' second pair, in a very scrappy game. For the first time this season we found ourselves needing both remaining games to snatch a draw. Aseem and Phil just took theirs, but Alex and Michal didn't, so we lost 4-2. A disappointing result, as we felt we hadn't done ourselves justice.

Coventry League Mens Division 4 Balsall Common 2 v Hunters   9-0

Friday night is clearly not a good night for badminton. Unable to play due to work commitments, I found myself in the unbelievable situation of only being able to field 4 players from my 11 man squad. Despite an attempt to reschedule the match, I had to field a team to avoid losing match points and with them any chance of promotion. Luckily we were a few days before the deadline for registrations and Mark Curry and Tom Orton stepped up. Along with Martin Toms, who has saved the team on several occasions, we were ready to go. On the Friday of the match, regular team player Dan escaped from work commitments, so Tom graciously bowed out. This meant we were fielding 4 regular team players, but only one regular pair. It would be a tough ask against the team that beat our full team 6-3. A further spanner in the works was provided by the motorway traffic, which made Alex very late. So much so that the match was effectively over by the time he arrived. Given our lack of regular players and other mishaps, a 9-0 loss is probably fair, if a little hard to swallow. Still, I'm not sure I'll let the team out on their own again! Big thanks to everyone who turned out for the team, particularly Mark, Tom and Martin who all volunteered at short notice.

Rugby League Mens Division 4 Hunters 4 v St Philips 4   4-2

For the much awaited return match with St Philips 4 we had to field a much changed team as both our youth players were absent with knee injuries and Dan Bunker made the bizarre choice of going to Spain instead of playing. Simon Piercey and Mark Currie lost their first match to Fowler and Kimon while Martin Toms and Richard Lewis won their first rubber without difficulty. Roles were reversed and the reverse rubbers so yet again the tie was set up for an exciting finish at 2-2. With Simon's smash now firing on all cylinders he and Richard beat Fowler and Pollard and Mark zipped around the court at light speed to ensure he at Martin managed to win their rubber in the 3rd game and ensure the victory.

Coventry League Mens Division 4 Hunters v Coventry Uni   7-2

After the disappointment of the last match, we were determined to finish the the season with a bang. Dan, who has played every match so far, was called away by work. Steve, who had been really excited about the match in our new team whatsap group, called up on the morning of the match suffering from a terrible lurgy. Mark Currie stepped in, so we were fielding two regular pairs. Despite losing the first game after taking a 17-13 lead, Phil and Alex put away all three games. Mike and Aseem played very well, coming back from losing their first against the opponents first pair to win all three of their matches. Simon and Mark played some of the closest games of the evening, easily wining against the third pair and scoring well in both their other games. Final result - a 7-2 win. Well played gentlemen and a good result to a most successful season. It looks very much as though we will be promoted in second place.

Rugby League Mens Division 1 Trinity 1 v Hunters 1   5-1

Trinity have so far been undefeated, but we'd put out a strong team and were hoping for the best. Aseem was out of the country and so Steve stepped in to help. We were unlikely to challenge Trinity or Claybrooke in the league standings, but any points from our last two matches could affect our final league position. Trinity, however, were on form, and despite some close games we were only able to bring in one win.

Last match of the season and this time Simon Piercy stepped in to replace Aseem who was still out of the country. Although this sounds like a terrible excuse, it took us a while to adjust to the hall and shuttle conditions. Both pairs felt they could have given better account of themselves.Claybrooke are a strong team and we struggled to make an impression, only picking up one game.

Coventry League Mens Division 2 St Philips 3 v Hunters 2   1-5

"After negotiating our way out of entering a dance competition by mistake and clearing the hall of the pixies and what not, we got cracking. St Phils brought out the vets for this match (and Rob) and the youthful Hunters team (in comparison) knew it would be a challenge to get past the crafty skills of Mark H, Martin I and John R (and a lesser extent Rob F, he just smashed it at us). There was a wobble at the start when Steve T and Antonio H ended up half a game down in the third game, but (somehow) managed to win. The tension built again when Simon P and Mark T went to three. At the end of a challenging, and very enjoyable match the score was 5-1 to Hunters 2. We are looking forward to our last match against Claybrook 3 in April. A final thanks to all the guys for stepping in at very short notice for this match."

Rugby League Mens Division 2 Claybrooke 3 v Hunters 2   1-5

Hunters 2 went out for the final match of the season last Wednesday. After the conditions on the Tuesday night we took our ice skates, but found a sauna instead, where someone had kindly painted badminton courts on the floor. Fortunately the floor was also dust free! We took the match in mostly straightforward games bar one, even with Mark injuring his arm, resulting in him playing at the net for parts of the split. (Who knew he could...?) After a fairly short and sweet match the score was 5-1 to Hunters 2. Not sure where that leaves us in the league but we did our bit
